Started in the United States in 1937 as the employee benefits department of Marsh & McLennan, Inc., our company took the name of “William M. Mercer” in 1959, when Marsh & McLennan acquired William M. Mercer Limited, a Canadian firm founded by William Manson Mercer in 1945. In 1975, Mercer became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Marsh & McLennan Companies, Inc. In 2002, we changed our corporate name to Mercer Human Resource Consulting. The company became Mercer in 2007.

Mercer has grown significantly in size and service capabilities through careful recruiting efforts and a series of mergers with other top-quality firms. Some of the firms that have contributed to the making of Mercer since the company's creation in Canada and its US incorporation in 1975 are included here.

1975

William M. Mercer, Inc. name established

In 1975, Marsh & McLennan turned the US benefits operation into a wholly owned subsidiary, which took its name from the Canadian operation and became William M. Mercer, Incorporated. In the next five years, we grew within and beyond North America.

1984

Mergers create leading global firm

Mercer become a leading global firm in our business, largely through a series of mergers with other top-quality consulting firms, such as: MPA Limited and Duncan C. Fraser & Co. in the UK and Europe; John Eriksen & Partners, Campbell & Cook, and E.S. Knight in Australia and New Zealand; and Meidinger, Inc., and A.S. Hansen in the US.

1992

Mercer Consulting Group established

In 1992, Marsh & McLennan established the Mercer Consulting Group, Inc., as a holding company for its three global consulting firms: William M. Mercer Companies, Inc., Mercer Management Consulting, Inc., and National Economic Research Associates, Inc.

1997

Mergers expand global reach

In 1997, our merger with A. Foster Higgins & Co. enhanced our presence in the US, and mergers with Sedgwick Noble Lowndes and Corporate Resources Group in 1998 contributed to expansion globally, but primarily in Europe and Asia.

2000

Delta joins Mercer Consulting Group

In 2000, Delta Consulting Group, the recognized global leader in consulting to CEOs on organizational leadership, architecture and change, became part of Mercer Consulting Group to form Mercer Delta Consulting.

2001

SCA Consulting becomes part of firm

In 2001, SCA Consulting, a highly respected performance measurement and compensation firm based in the US and UK, became part of Mercer, strengthening our ability to help employers develop and implement effective compensation and reward programs.

2002

Name change for company

In 2002, William M. Mercer Companies LLC changed its name to Mercer LLC to reflect the broad array of consulting services we offer to help organizations create business value through their people. Simultaneous with changing our name, we adopted the new visual identity system used by all wholly owned Marsh & McLennan Companies.

2003

Big year for strategic acquisitions

In 2003, Mercer completed several acquisitions that strengthened our capabilities and added to our presence in Europe: the actuarial division of KPMG and the actuarial experts' opinion activities of PricewaterhouseCoopers in Germany; Benefit Network ASA and Benefit Network Consulting AS, integrating their consulting, brokerage, administration and communication business in Norway and Sweden; and KPMG's consulting and administration business in Switzerland. Mercer Inc. also signed a definitive agreement to merge Oliver, Wyman & Company, best known for its quantitative approach to strategy formulation in financial services, with Mercer's financial services strategy and risk consulting units to form Mercer Oliver Wyman, creating the world's premier financial services consultancy.

2004

Acquired Synhrgy HR Technologies

In 2004, Mercer acquired Synhrgy HR Technologies, a leading provider of human resource technology and outsourcing services to Fortune 1000 companies, expanding the firm's outsourcing business in the US.

2005

Acquired Wyatt’s New Zealand business

Mercer acquired Watson Wyatt’s New Zealand business, consolidating Mercer’s position as a leading consultancy for such services in that country.

2005

Acquired Mellon Human Resources

In 2005, Mercer acquired the Australian operations of Mellon Human Resources & Investor Solutions.

2007

Acquired Höfer Vorsorge-Management

In December 2007, Mercer acquired Höfer Vorsorge-Management, one of Germany’s leading actuarial and retirement consulting firms. The acquisition gave Mercer the top market position in Germany, extending its employee base and adding offices in Berlin, Karlsruhe, Leipzig, Mülheim and Wiesbaden.

2007

New Mercer brand

In September 2007, Mercer launched a new global brand initiative reflecting expanded business and simplified its name to “Mercer”. The company's new branding builds on its leadership in the HR consulting space while expanding the focus on its outsourcing and investments businesses.

2008

Merger with Tesi

In October 2008, Mercer's operations in Italy merged with Tesi, one of Italy’s premier human capital consulting firms. The combined business, known as Mercer Tesi, significantly added to our presence in Milan and Rome and enhanced our capabilities in advising domestic and international companies on human capital issues. Specialists in retirement, employee benefits, actuarial, investment consulting and information product solutions continue to do business in Italy as Mercer.

2010

Mercer acquires ORC Worldwide

Mercer announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire ORC Worldwide, to become an unparalleled provider of global human resource intelligence and to further strengthen related international consulting, conference and educational services. Both firms have a significant global presence. ORC’s strong market position and reputation in the United States, particularly in the area of international assignment expertise, complements Mercer’s worldwide research capabilities and extensive global network of offices.

2010

Mercer acquires IPA

Mercer announced that it has acquired Innovative Process Administration, LLC (IPA), a privately owned, health and benefits administration technology provider. This acquisition plays a key role in Mercer’s ongoing commitment to become the benefits administration provider of choice for health and benefit plans of all sizes and market segments. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
